About My Characters

May 14, 2023 - Writing

If you know anything about me, you know that I have a lot of characters! You can learn essentially everything about them at my Toyhouse Page (https://toyhou.se/vecderg/), but those are generally for the bios about the characters themselves. Since I want to keep those reference sheets relatively clean, I will have this page to talk about some of my characters' development and histories. Many characters won't be included on this page since their history isn't particularly inspired (Rin was made because I just wanted a Zeraora, Day was made because I just wanted a platinum fox), but I hope you enjoy reading regardless.

This page will most likely be updated multiple times.

FIDGET HABANOGARD

Fidget is basically where it all started! While I had made multiple characters beforehand, he was the first character that I had really gotten attached to. He's evolved a good bit over time, but always kept that peppy kid-like energy. He was also explicitly designed to become my sona, which was a difficult endeavor for me as I wasn't sure what species to make him. I ended up on a hybrid because I couldn't decide between my top two favorite species (red panda/dragon), and I'm very happy that I didn't. Other contenders included dinosaur, otter, and dolphin.

Fidget essentially lives in a world filled with monsters and magic which was initially supposed to be a more ironic take on RPG worlds, but then it stopped being ironic. He has fire powers and is both talented and a hard worker, but doesn't tend to think things through.

PLUCK LURO

While I have more trouble finding use for Pluck nowadays, it's very difficult for me to overstate just how important of a character he was to me. He's essentially the OC that made me come out as furry, and a character who helped me sort out a lot of my feelings, back when that was really important for my own emotional growth.

Pluck is a wingless dragon living in the suburbs who's very lazy but incredibly smart, and uses his talents to both play at local fighting game matches and to develop his own fighting game. I originally planned a whole comic for him, but don't feel as much for his story anymore, becoming especially awkward once the whole fighting game thing became a reality rather than a pipe dream. However, he has a comfy spot in my noncanon SonaPartment comics, acting as the realist for my more wacky characters. There are also multiple characters in his universe that you don't get to see much since his story fell through.

UBE

Gnar is my favorite League of Legends character, and I wanted to make a character based off him! I didn't expect Ube to quickly become one of my favorite characters of all time, causing me to get an immense amount of content for him. His color scheme was partly suggested by friends (which became his namesake), while his mask and spear were meant to be a spin-off of Gnar's features. He's officially grown into his own character, being a fennec-kobold rather than a yordle, and lives in Fidget's universe.

Ube has no magic in a universe full of magic, making him a very hesitant and shy individual who relies strongly on his spear. He lives comfortably in his tribe, but has few friends and craves affection. Once he becomes comfortable around others, he's actually very energetic and silly! Native Kaliwe speaker.

kyle14

He might not look like it, but kyle14 has one of the richest and most complicated backstories out of all my characters, both his actual one and his meta backstory. He was a joke character that came out of a conversation with someone (who I don't talk with anymore) and was meant to put every original character trope into one singular powerful being. I ended up actually loving him but was initially afraid that people would find it offensive... but everyone really loved him too!! Every April Fools I tried to come up with a bigger and better joke for his Twitter takeover, and it's become an entire thing. If you really want to learn his lore, here are the links:

BEEWEE

Beewee had a very simple design direction: make a character that would be easy to make for a simple 3D game. I wanted to have a foray into 3D game development... but I had very little to show for a 3D Beewee game, until recently!

His name was one of the few where I just looked at him and strung together whatever syllables felt like him. His character was based on the idea of a "cute but deadly character, but not like the others." I wasn't sure what made him truly different until I realized that most characters of the stereotype have the "cute" and "deadly" modes like a toggle on a switch. Beewee isn't like that. He giggles while slaying great guardians the size of skyscrapers, and would have the exact same giggle if he were playing Roblox. The innate awe and horror that comes from this literal murderer cat child is something that's really inspired me to complete his story through his game, as well as creating an entire world essentially around him.

(As an extra note, I may refer to Beewee as a pseudo-ninja because he was meant to evoke the feelings of a ninja without being one, similar to his "Japan-esque" country. As it stands though, "ninja" seems to imply "pseudo-ninja" anyway because I'm the only one who's actually worrying about historically accurate ninja in media, so I will try not to worry about it)

ARDEN HYDE

I keep a list of species and design elements that I want to make into characters, and one character I wanted to make for a while was a cow! I had drafted multiple designs on and off that didn't really come together, until I did a commission for a skunk. After combining the two species (which worked a lot better once I decided on a highland cattle, my favorite cow breed) and asking for feedback on the initial drafts, people really liked him! It encouraged me to keep going with the character, and I'm very happy with Hyde's current design. His skunk genes are shown mainly through his big tail, but also gives him actual paws, which lets me avoid the various problems with hoof-hands.

Hyde's lore isn't fully fleshed out. He's definitely friendly and easy to get along with, most likely a wanderer who likes meeting people and exploring the land. He lives in Fidget's universe, but is much more of a sightseer rather than a thrill-seeker compared to Fidget. His powers aren't incredibly strong, and are air/wind-themed, which can be channeled to be stronger using his cowbell.
